Deposit protection — landlord never protected it

Moving out of a flat I've rented for 18 months. Just discovered my landlord never protected my £1,200 deposit in a scheme. I checked all three schemes (DPS, MyDeposits, TDS) and it's not in any of them.

I know this means they could owe me compensation. How do I handle this? Do I need a solicitor?
