Deprivation (IMD) Lookup
Find the Index of Multiple Deprivation decile for any UK postcode. Decile 1 = among the most deprived 10% of areas; decile 10 = the least.
What is the IMD?
The Index of Multiple Deprivation is the UK government's official measure of relative deprivation, combining seven domains: income, employment, education, health, crime, barriers to housing & services, and living environment. Areas are ranked and split into deciles — decile 1 contains the most deprived 10%, decile 10 the least deprived 10%.
England uses IMD 2019 (the most recent release). Wales uses WIMD 2019. We map your postcode to its MSOA and surface the decile recorded there. Deciles are relative — they compare areas within the same country, not internationally.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a low decile a dealbreaker for buyers?
- Not on its own. IMD reflects population characteristics, not the physical desirability of every street. Areas in decile 3–4 often contain pockets of much higher or lower deprivation. Use this as one data point alongside crime, schools, and on-the-ground research.
- Does IMD include crime?
- Yes, crime is one of the seven domains. For more detail use our Crime Checker, which surfaces recorded crime volumes from the Police API for any postcode.
- Which postcodes are supported?
- England (IMD 2019) and Wales (WIMD 2019). Scottish and Northern Irish postcodes are not covered.
