Retirement Area Finder

Looking for a retirement-friendly UK area? A 0–100 score from Census 2021 — older residents, retired share, and general health combined.

How the score is built

We combine three Census 2021 signals: the share of older residents aged 55+ (45% weight), the share of currently-retired residents (35%), and the share of residents reporting good or very good general health (20%). Each axis is rescaled to 0–100 then weighted.

A score of 65+ means this is a recognisable retirement area — you'll find peers, services tailored to older residents, and an established retired community. Below 35 means the area skews young and you may feel demographically out of place.

Frequently asked questions

Does this measure healthcare access?
Not directly. Health is included only as a quality-of-life proxy. For specific healthcare access, check NHS service finder tools and our Nearby Amenities Checker (which surfaces hospitals and GP surgeries near a postcode).
Is high retirement concentration always desirable?
Depends on your priorities. Some retirees want peer community and gentle pace; others want intergenerational mix, lively cafes, and grandchildren-friendly amenities. Use this score as a starting point, not a verdict.
Which postcodes are supported?
England and Wales only — Census 2021 MSOA-level data is not published for Scotland or Northern Ireland.
